PERIMETER at FIS 2010

We are pleased to announce that our paper entitled “Experimental Testing in the Future Internet PERIMETER Project” was accepted to the FIS 2010 conference.
The paper provides an insight into the testing and experimental testing aspects of the PERIMETER project and the role of testbeds in this regard.
This conference which is the third Future Internet Symposium will take place in Berlin on 20-22 September 2010.

The paper was written by the TSSG PERIMETER partners Eileen Dillon, Gemma Power and Frances Cleary Grant.
We are also pleased to announce that we will be demonstrating the PERIMETER project functionality during the demo sessions at this conference. In particular, a demonstration and explanation of the Quality of Experience management system of PERIMETER will be provided and will allow visitors to interact with the system using a Google Android device with the PERIMETER middleware installed. This will be illustrated with the aid of the purpose built PERIMETER Visualisation Tool.

PERIMETER contributes to FIRE whitepaper

PERIMETER is one of the First Wave of FIRE Projects established under FP7. As apart of FIRE we were invited to contribute to the FIRE whitepaper. On behalf of the PERIMETER consortium Eileen Dillon and Gemma Power from the Waterford Institute of Technology (TSSG division) Ireland and Martin Dobler from FH Vorarlberg Austria (FHV) contributed to this paper entitled “Experimentally driven research white paper: On the existence of experimentally-driven research methodology” which has now been published by the FIREworks Support Action.
The whitepaper attempts to scope the area of experimentally driven research by proposing a methodology and related terminology that should help research in the ICT domain to understand how this methodology can be applied. The PERIMETER consortium contributed their view on testing and experimentation methodologies regarding the validation of the innovative aspects of the project and the employment of a user-driven approach.
The whitepaper can be found on the FIRE website.

PERIMETER Flash Demo of Scenario Two

The PERIMETER team have uploaded the second flash demonstration of a scenario that the final system could be used for. This scenario describes an hypothetical use-case of the PERIMETER system from the user point of view in the Emergency Situation domain. The flash demonstration can be found on the main PERIMETER website. This scenario movie has been produced by the Design & Usability team in TSSG-WIT.

This and other scenarios were derived using following a top-down methodology: after a brainstorming phase, where each partner provided a description of a use case, or usage scenario, for the PERIMETER infrastructure, seen as the optimal output of the entire project. The scenarios were then analyzed and their main elements integrated into three different overall scenarios.
The first scenario for the PERIMETER project is also available from the PERIMETER website here.

PERIMETER and FEDERICA

The PERIMETER consortium are pleased to announce that they have procured a FEDERICA slice for use within the project.
FEDERICA-logo.gif
FEDERICA stands for Federated E-infrastructure Dedicated to European Researchers Innovating in Computing network Architectures. It is an FP7 project which started in January 2008 and is expected to run until October 2010. FEDERICA is the implementation of an experimental network infrastructure for trialling new networking technologies. The target users of the infrastructure are the researchers and the activities engaged in research “on” networking, using networks not just as the “tool” but primarily as the “subject’ of their work, making it an ideal choice for use in the PERIMETER project.
The FEDERICA slice procured by PERIMETER consists of five Virtual Nodes. These nodes will be used to deploy the PERIMETER Support Nodes and will allow for a natural maturation of the of the interconnection from a Layer 3 to a Layer 2 connection between the Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) and the Technische Universitaet Berlin (TUB) testbeds used in PERIMETER. The slice will be used for a variety of purposes within PERIMETER including scalability, performance, network overloading and disruptive testing.

The WIT testbed connects to the FEDERICA slice via HEAnet – Ireland’s National Education & Research Network and the TUB testbed connects to the FEDERICA slice via DFN – Germany’s Research Network, as depicted in the above diagram.

PERIMETER at HealthCom 2010

Gemma Power (WIT) will be presenting at the HealthCom 2010 conference next week.
This is the 12th International Conference on e-Health Networking, Application & Services IEEE Healthcom 2010 event and it takes place in Lyon France on 1-3 July 2010.
The presentation will centre around our accpeted PERIMETER paper entitled “Seamless Mobile Communications for mHealth”, which examines the use of mobile devices and technologies within the PERIMETER project in providing seamless mobile communications for mHealth. In particular, PERIMETER makes use of smart phones with intelligent sensors with sensing capabilities such as GPS location, proximity and accelerometers to create a mobile wireless sensor network to ensure sensitive health related information can be transferred in a seamless and timely fashion across different selected high quality network connections. This presentation will take place in Session 2 on “mHealth for Emergency Management” on July 1st. The paper will also be published in the Journal of eHealth Technology and Application to be distributed at the Healthcom2010 conference.
The conference is a very interesting one with sessions on Enabling Technologies, Enabling Information Systems, Enabling Applications, mHealth for Independent Living, mHealth for Emergency Management and U-Health. The full program is available here.

PERIMETER at FIREweek 2010

Next week will be a busy one for the PERIMETER consortium!
First, we have the second year review for the project and then it is straight onto the Future Internet Research and Experimentation (FIRE) event in Barcelona, Spain.
The review will take place at PERIMETER partner’s GFI offices in Barcelona on Tuesday 29th June 2010.
FIREweek 2010 takes place in Barcelona, Spain at the Communication Campus of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

Members of PERIMETER will attend the FIRE event, taking place on 30 June – 1 July.
Members of PERIMETER will take part in the Brokerage Event on 30th June. The brokerage event is being organised within the framework of the FIREweek 2010 in order to bring together representatives from the ongoing FIRE projects and other participants. The aim of the meetings is to discuss future collaboration in the forthcoming FP7 Calls, Technology Transfer agreements, etc. Please find the catalogue for the project profiles and representatives here. If you would like to meet with any of the PERIMETER team, you will need to register your interest here before June 27th so the meeting can be set up in time. We would be delighted to meet with you in this regard.
