On behalf of the PERIMETER consortium Eileen Dillon and Gemma Power from the Waterford Institute of Technology (TSSG division) Ireland and Martin Dobler from FH Vorarlberg Austria (FHV) contributed to this paper entitled "Experimentally driven research white paper: On the existence of experimentally-driven research methodology" which has now been published by the FIREworks Support Action.

The whitepaper attempts to scope the area of experimentally driven research by proposing a methodology and related terminology that should help research in the ICT domain to understand how this methodology can be applied. The PERIMETER consortium contributed their view on testing and experimentation methodologies regarding the validation of the innovative aspects of the project and the employment of a user-driven approach.

The flash demonstration can be found on the main PERIMETER website. This scenario movie has been produced by the Design & Usability team in TSSG-WIT.

This and other scenarios were derived using following a top-down methodology: after a brainstorming phase, where each partner provided a description of a use case, or usage scenario, for the PERIMETER infrastructure, seen as the optimal output of the entire project. The scenarios were then analyzed and their main elements integrated into three different overall scenarios.

The first scenario for the PERIMETER project is also available from the PERIMETER website here.

FEDERICA stands for Federated E-infrastructure Dedicated to European Researchers Innovating in Computing network Architectures. It is an FP7 project which started in January 2008 and is expected to run until October 2010. FEDERICA is the implementation of an experimental network infrastructure for trialling new networking technologies. The target users of the infrastructure are the researchers and the activities engaged in research “on” networking, using networks not just as the “tool” but primarily as the “subject’ of their work, making it an ideal choice for use in the PERIMETER project.

The FEDERICA slice procured by PERIMETER consists of five Virtual Nodes. These nodes will be used to deploy the PERIMETER Support Nodes and will allow for a natural maturation of the of the interconnection from a Layer 3 to a Layer 2 connection between the Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) and the Technische Universitaet Berlin (TUB) testbeds used in PERIMETER. The slice will be used for a variety of purposes within PERIMETER including scalability, performance, network overloading and disruptive testing.

The WIT testbed connects to the FEDERICA slice via HEAnet – Ireland’s National Education & Research Network and the TUB testbed connects to the FEDERICA slice via DFN - Germany’s Research Network, as depicted in the above diagram.

This is the 12th International Conference on e-Health Networking, Application & Services IEEE Healthcom 2010 event and it takes place in Lyon France on 1-3 July 2010.

The presentation will centre around our accpeted PERIMETER paper entitled "Seamless Mobile Communications for mHealth", which examines the use of mobile devices and technologies within the PERIMETER project in providing seamless mobile communications for mHealth. In particular, PERIMETER makes use of smart phones with intelligent sensors with sensing capabilities such as GPS location, proximity and accelerometers to create a mobile wireless sensor network to ensure sensitive health related information can be transferred in a seamless and timely fashion across different selected high quality network connections. This presentation will take place in Session 2 on "mHealth for Emergency Management" on July 1st. The paper will also be published in the Journal of eHealth Technology and Application to be distributed at the Healthcom2010 conference.

The conference is a very interesting one with sessions on Enabling Technologies, Enabling Information Systems, Enabling Applications, mHealth for Independent Living, mHealth for Emergency Management and U-Health.

Instead, the meeting took place over video conferencing. The system used was the WebEx system which was supplied by our Telefonica partners. The WebEx tool allow the team to share and present presentations, applications, real-time desktop. The tool allows sharing with phone conferencing so everyone sees the same thing while you talk. This system proved very productive and successful and the meeting progressed according to its scheduled agenda.

Important decisions were made in relation to Phase 2 of the project; the action flow for this "Emergency Service Enhancement Scenario" where decided upon, the changes to the architecture and interfaces between the components were defined and the code base was regenerated and integrated to include these new changes. This work has allowed the development and coding for the functionalities for this scenario to begin!

The Think-Trust project has identified an interim set of research challenges that require attention in order to provide trustworthy hardware and software for the Information Society. These research challenges stem from the four priority areas identified in Recommendation 1 of the RISEPTIS Report.
Think-Trust are seeking input and comment on these interim research challenges from the wider trust and security communities and asked for some contribution from the PERIMETER project. The feedback which PERIMETER has provided will contribute to the final Think-Trust Recommendations Report (D3.1C), due for publication in June, 2010.

PERIMETER partners University of Geneva (experts in trust management) and TSSG contributed to this on behalf of the PERIMETER project.

If you would also like to contribute to this process, please see the Think-Trust project for more detail.

Eileen Dillon and Frances Cleary-Grant represented TSSG-WIT at the PERIMETER project's sixth plenary meeting, held in snowy Dornbirn Austria , 8-9 February 2010. The meeting was hosted by PERIMETER partner, Fachhochschule Vorarlberg GMBH.

Day One of the meeting was mostly devoted to technical and integration issues as the consortium strives to integrate, verify and validate the PERIMETER system code-base and demonstrates its capabilities across the project’s two federated testbeds (one in Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG), Waterford and the other in Technische Universitaet Berlin). Significant progress has been accomplished in this area thus far, especially with regard to the progress being made with the installation of the Google Android operating system on a variety of devices, including the Advent 4211-B Netbook and on the Samsung NC10.

Day 2 of the meeting consisted of a Workshop for cross-impact analysis for the project in order to identify the expected and achievable outputs and impact of this research both from an academic and industrial perspective. The consortium has been very active in the area of dissemination and a substantial amount of dissemination activities (papers, conferences, etc.) have been completed, with 34 activities recorded to date and with many more in the pipeline, the latest of which is the TSSG-WIT led paper entitled QoE Testbed Infrastructure and Services: Enriching the End User’s Experience for the upcoming TridentCom conference in Berlin, Germany in May 2010.
